As a new business owner, there are countless challenges you face—many of which you’re unprepared for. We all start out with optimism and enthusiasm, but the journey can sometimes take us to unexpected places. I’d like to share one of the most difficult experiences I had in the early days of Clara James Tutoring, not to dwell on the negatives, but to highlight the importance of resilience, learning, and growth.
It was about a year after I launched Clara James Tutoring, and I was still finding my feet. Like many small business owners, I was eager to grow and reach more people who needed our services. So, when I received a call from a man who claimed he could get me on the front page of Google, I was intrigued. He praised the work we were doing, emphasizing how crucial it was for children to receive the support they needed. His words resonated with me, and I was drawn in by the promise of greater visibility and the chance to help more students.
The offer seemed almost too good to be true, but he assured me that, because of his admiration for our mission, he had secured a special deal. For just a few hundred pounds, I could secure a prime spot on Google for six months. Excited by the prospect, I agreed, thinking this could be the breakthrough we needed.
Six months later, the phone rang again. This time, it wasn’t a friendly voice offering help, but a cold demand for payment. “You didn’t cancel your contract,” the man said, “so now you owe us thousands of pounds.” My heart sank. I hadn’t realized that by not cancelling, I was committing to a huge financial burden.
Panic set in. The thought of bailiffs coming to my home, disrupting my family, and seizing our possessions was terrifying. I tried to negotiate, but the pressure only mounted. Eventually, I agreed to a payment plan, feeling cornered and desperate to resolve the situation.
But the nightmare didn’t end there. When I received my next Barclaycard statement, I was shocked to discover that multiple transactions had been processed, totalling £13,000—far beyond what I had agreed to. My account was overdrawn, and the financial strain was overwhelming.
In that moment of despair, I felt utterly defeated. I questioned everything—how could I have been so naïve? How could I recover from this? But in the midst of that darkness, I found a resolve I didn’t know I had.
I reached out to Citizens Advice, who were incredibly supportive. With their guidance, I filed a case with the fraud department and pursued legal action. It was a long and arduous process, but eventually, justice was served. I was able to reclaim the money that had been taken, and my credit rating was restored.
Looking back, I can see how easy it was to fall into that trap. As new business owners, we’re eager to succeed and often lack the knowledge or experience to navigate these situations. But this experience, as painful as it was, taught me some of the most valuable lessons of my life.
First and foremost, it taught me the importance of being cautious and informed. Not every opportunity is as it seems, and it’s crucial to do your research before committing to anything that could have significant consequences.
It also reinforced the importance of resilience. Running a business is not a straight path—it’s a journey with ups and downs, and it’s how we respond to the setbacks that define our success. This experience didn’t break me; it made me stronger, more determined, and more aware.
Finally, it taught me the value of support. Whether it’s friends, family, or professional advisors, having people you can turn to in times of need is essential. We don’t have to face these challenges alone.
I share this story not to dwell on the past, but to encourage others who may be facing their own challenges. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed or uncertain, know that you’re not alone. We all have our struggles, but it’s how we learn and grow from them that matters.
At Clara James Tutoring, we’ve built our business on the foundation of these hard-earned lessons. We approach every challenge with caution, resilience, and a commitment to doing what’s right. And most importantly, we never lose sight of our mission—to support children in their educational journey with care, compassion, and integrity.
If you’re a new business owner, or if you’re considering starting your own journey, I hope my story serves as a reminder to trust your instincts, do your research, and never give up. The path may be difficult, but the rewards of perseverance are worth every step.
